Woodsong Reading - Post Hurricane Rita

Hi there!

I hope your week's been going well -- we've had a little bit of a hurricane adventure over here. Things aren't quite settled yet, but they are looking better.

We had decided to weather the hurricane at home in Katy; about 1:30 last Thursday morning, we saw the revised hurricane Rita path was going to pass directly over our house, so we decided to evacuate instead. By that time, all the roads north and west out of Houston were already totally clogged, so we went east instead to Baton Rouge.

We escaped the terrible traffic problems the other 3 million suffered, but it still took 9 hours to make a 5 hour trip. Of course, Hurricane Rita shifted course again to miss Houston and clobber the Texas/Louisiana border instead. We had some strong winds in Baton Rouge, lost some trees, and were without power for four days.

We finally headed back home late Tuesday night -- stacked 15 gas cans on top of the car and made the trip. For about 45 miles each side of the border, it looked like a black hole. No power, no lights, empty cities, no gas, no nothing. Lake Charles and Beaumont were completely empty and closed. Much of the developed land south of Interstate 10 just wasn't there anymore -- it was a very scary sight.

Got back home for a few hours, then had to jump on a flight to Ohio for work reasons. Still haven't caught up on missed sleep.

I think the lesson here is that you simply can't evacuate a large city in a couple of days. If it happens again, we're staying home. Most of the people in Texas who died from the hurricane died on the highways in the traffic jams -- scary.

How about some quick words from my sponsors, then on to the reading.

We'll again pull two cards -- the first suggests something we should focus on for the week. The second suggests things we might consider in order to fully benefit from the attributes of the first card.

The cards are:

King of Swords (reversed)

Strength (reversed)

The King of Swords suggest competence, capability, and knowledge. The King of Swords always knows the right thing to do. Problem is, he's also a little impatient -- the right course is obvious to him and he feels it should be obvious to everyone else. When you ask him a question, his answer is usually "What a dumb question -- you should know the answer!"

The thing is, he's usually right -- we normally do know the answer, we just don't want to admit or accept it. It might not be the answer we'd like, but we still know what's right. Since our King is reversed, I think this is really emphasized -- if something is troubling us, we probably know the best way to address it, but we might not want to accept that answer.

Our next card, Strength, can help us pin this down. The Strength card doesn't really mean physical strength, it speaks more of inner strength of conviction and purpose. Strength would accept a course of action if it felt it was the right thing to do -- but a reversed Strength might have difficulty accepting what we really know is right ... just like our reversed King.

I think these two cards simply emphasize the same message -- if something is troubling us, we probably already know the best course of action to address the problem. But ... we may find it difficult to accept the answer -- perhaps it would force us to look in places we'd rather ignore. Perhaps we feel we might fail; perhaps we feel it would be too difficult. These may all be true -- but that doesn't mean it's not the right thing to do. Sometimes there is no easy way out ... just the right way out. We need to be prepared to take the hard road at times -- and the payoff is usually worth it.

And that's about it this time! I hope things go well for you this week and look forward to talking to you again next week. Woodsong Reading

Hi there!

I hope your week's begun well -- we're watching Hurricane Rita very closely. When you look at the five-day forecast, Houston's right in the middle of the bullseye!

My part of town (west side, on the prairie) is pretty safe from rising water. Houston itself is about 40 miles from the Gulf, so storm surge shouldn't be a problem. Our main concern is high winds. However, as we found out in Tropical Storm Allison a few years back, when you drop 36 inches of rain in four hours on one spot, it's going to flood!

I was actually supposed to be in Columbus, Ohio Friday, returning late Friday night. If the storm continues, though, the airport will likely be closed. I'm hoping to push my visit back to next week instead.

On a brighter note, we're getting ready for the Texas Renaissance festival; planning on going in a couple of weeks. My daughter's sewing her own costume this year; I'm trying to convince her that serving wenches didn't wear miniskirts back then. It's not getting through, though.

How about some quick words from my sponsors, then on to the reading.

We'll again pull two cards -- the first suggests something we should focus on for the week. The second suggests things we might consider in order to fully benefit from the attributes of the first card.

The cards are:

Ten of Pentacles

Five of Wands

We've seen the Ten of Pentacles just a week or so ago. I mentioned then that Tens usually suggest the logical culmination of the aspects of a suit. Since Pentacles refer to financial and physical matters, this Ten suggests the achievement and enjoyment of financial or physical well-being.

This is a nice place to be -- and a nice goal to have! The real attraction is the feeling that you've arrived at a successfuly completion and can now enjoy the stress-free rewards of that condition.

The Five of Wands does add a bit to this message, though. It's really a reminder -- while the Ten of Pentacles is a wonderful goal, you'd better expect to work if you want to achieve it -- it's not going to be given to you!

Still, we shouldn't get distracted or dismayed at the struggle necessary to achieve success. Struggle is ... well, they call it "struggle" for a reason, don't they! That doesn't mean there aren't benefits and payoffs. Struggle makes us stronger, struggle makes us enjoy and respect our accomplishments, struggle makes us respect and believe in ourselves. Struggle is the normal condition -- it's not the universe picking on us, it's the way things are supposed to be!

And it does yield ultimate rewards -- like the Ten of Pentacles. If the goal is worthwhile, then the work necessary to achieve that goal is just as worthwhile!

And that's about it this time! I hope things go well for you this week and look forward to talking to you again next week. Woodsong Reading

Hi there!

I hope your week's been going well -- I'm in Dallas this week. I'm staying in a hotel that's full of New Orleans refugees; it's really been interesting talking to them.

I'm not going to dwell on Katrina stuff -- I'm sure we're all getting our full from the normal news -- but I did want to pass along a cute story I heard.

Much of the land around New Orleans is rural; many of the people there had horses. They weren't able to evacuate the horses; many didn't make it as the water rose up past their stables. However, many were able to break free to try and save theirselves.

One particular group of horses broke out of their stalls and made it to high ground. After the storm passed, they had nothing to eat. So ... the troup of horses kept roving along the high ground till they made it to a store -- a feed store! They kicked open the door, went inside, and proceeded to have themselves a fine feast until they were finally rescued several days later.

How about some quick words from my sponsors, then on to the reading.

We'll again pull two cards -- the first suggests something we should focus on for the week. The second suggests things we might consider in order to fully benefit from the attributes of the first card.

The cards are:

Six of Swords (Reversed)

Seven of Pentacles (Reversed)

The Six of Swords is concerned with change -- or at least, with one particular part of change. Have you ever been in a situation where you decided a change was due? As you're progressing with the change (maybe a move, maybe a job change, maybe a relationship change, maybe ... etc), you may have second thoughts and start wondering if you're doing the right thing? Perhaps you start looking back and thinking "well, maybe things weren't that bad?" or "I wonder if I'm making the right choice?"

It's normal to be uncomfortable when we're leaving a known situation for a new and unknown environment -- even if the old known situation wasn't all that enjoyable! The Six of Swords recognizes this little anxious feeling we may have when we consider change. It's important to realize this is a normal feeling -- change is good when we select it for the right reasons. Still, we're going to feel a little antsy when we start to realize this change.

As we all know, once we've completed the change and become more comfortable with our new choice, the anxiety goes away. Even though we know this will happen, we still go through this anxious and uneasy period -- it's normal.

Since this Six is reversed, it suggests we may be a little leary of considering change because we're uneasy about leaving a known situation for an unknown situation. We might consider our next card, the Seven of Pentacles, to help us think about our feelings.

The Seven of Pentacles suggests we consider our physical and fiscal well-being. If the change will help us in either of these areas, then it's likely worth the anxiety to go ahead and consider adopting the change. Our overall situation may be better after the change; this advance in our prospects makes it easier to become comfortable with our choice.

So ... if you're in a position where you may have an option to consider change, but are uneasy about doing so because of the unknowns ... you may want to give a little extra attention to any physical or fiscal benefits you may gain because of the change. These prospects may help you make the choice that works best for you.

And that's about it this time! I hope things go well for you this week and look forward to talking to you again next week. Woodsong Reading

I hope your week's been going well -- things are pretty hectic here in the South. Houston's got about 250,000 Katrina folks in town -- most of them being folks who were able to escape New Orleans before the storm although the news mainly covers the 15,000 evacuees in the Astrodome. All the stores are pretty jammed -- went to the grocery store the other day and it was packed like it was holiday-cooking time. Same thing at the mall -- clothes stores, electronics, furniture (my sister sells furniture -- she sold as much in one day last week as she normally does in a month), real estate (my son's a realtor -- he's been doing volunteer work at the shelters trying to help folks find apartments and homes), house supplies, etc.

We can get email into our family in Baton Rouge, but still can't get through on the phone. I hear Baton Rouge has grown by about 350,000 people -- more than double their pre-Katrina population!

Back in the early 1900's, Galveston was the leading city in Texas. Center of culture, architecture, commerce, etc. A hurricane pretty much wiped out the city ("Isaac's Storm"). The city rebuilt, but it took long enough to recover (plus many folks didn't want to live there anymore) that it lost it's prominence as the number one town in Texas. It's now a sleepy little beach town while Houston has grown into the commercial monster.

I wonder if the same thing will happen with Baton Rouge and New Orleans? It will take time to rebuild New Orleans -- in the meantime, commerce must continue. Baton Rouge is a deep water Mississippi river port (meaning it can handle the large ocean-going ships and tankers) and it may handle much of the work previously done in New Orleans. New Orleans folks are buying homes and enrolling their kids in B.R. schools -- putting down roots. Plus, I wonder how many people will want to go back to New Orleans? Could be that Baton Rouge (now the largest city in Louisiana) may supercede New Orleans as the state's main city.

Baton Rouge trivia: The dollar sign ($) was first devised and used in Baton Rouge! I believe it was a Spanish clerk who came up with it.

How about some quick words from my sponsors, then on to the reading.

We'll again pull two cards -- the first suggests something we should focus on for the week. The second suggests things we might consider in order to fully benefit from the attributes of the first card.

The cards are:

Page of Cups (Reversed)

Ten of Pentacles

The Page of Cups suggests the beginnings of an emotional attachment. It's not yet a committment, but it is an earnest interest. Some of these develop into greater emotional concerns -- perhaps ones that can provide a base of good feelings for the remainder of your life. Some don't go that far -- and some don't really go anywhere at all! Still, you've got to start somewhere -- and just because most won't develop doesn't mean you should avoid them. In fact, if you don't invest some time in these initial emotional considerations, they'll never have an opportunity to grow.

Our second card is the Ten of Pentacles. Ten's suggest the logical culmination of the aspects of a suit. Since Pentacles refer to financial and physical matters, this Ten suggests the achievement and enjoyment of financial or physical well-being. It doesn't really suggest wild spending sprees; it more suggests the freedom of stress from having to worry about these types of matters.

I was watching an episode of Gene Simmon's Rock School the other day (I'm not only a sucker for reality TV, I'm really a sucker for musical reality TV!). He was participating in a debate with the students of the school (subject: Rock and Roll has no place in modern society). He had suggested that rock music was basically today's folk music; he also said it was a commercially viable product and that he had earned quite a bit of money in rock music. One of the student's replied "Yes, but money isn't everything."

Not to debate whether this statement is trite nonsense or deep wisdom -- but you might go one step further and ask "If it's not everything, then what missing pieces do I need to add?"

I think this two card spread suggests an answer. If we want to enjoy financial well-being, then we have to have emotional assets to rely on. If we don't have emotional attachments, then financial or physical well-being is rather hollow. If we have developed emotional matters, then we can most enjoy them in the reduced stress environment of physical well-being.

So -- if you have great goals in life, it's okay to have money or health goals. But, be sure you don't ignore your heart as you progress along your journey!

And that's about it this time! I hope things go well for you this week and look forward to talking to you again next week.
