Hi there!
I hope your week's been going well -- I've been captivated by the news from New Orleans and Biloxi. Haven't really been able to concentrate on anything else.
I used to live in New Orleans -- I remember the big fear about hurricanes wasn't the rain or the wind; it was that a storm would hit just east of the city. That way, the leading winds heading west would push water from Lake Pontchartrain up against the west back (where there was nowhere for the water to go), then southerly winds after the storm passed would push this pileup of water south against the levee. That's exactly what happened this time; it's a total worst-case scenario.
We spent the weekend watching hurricane coverage on the various cable channels. I think Fox News was the best, followed closely by MSNBC. CNN wasn't bad, but The Weather Channel was the absolute worst! Their hurricane "expert" was so clueless that it was almost criminal. At one point when it was plain the eye would pass to the east of New Orleans (see previous paragraph!), the "expert" proclaimed "Well, that's good news for New Orleans. This will mean only some brief flooding from rain." Was his name Dr. Steve Lyons? I'm always leary of people who insist on the "Dr" part -- usually indicates they're short on ability so they make up for it with credentials.
The story from these hurricane-stricken areas is going to get much, much worse. New Orleans may never recover. I'm still shocked when I look at the coverage. The website http://www.nola.com is going strong with pretty good local coverage.
I believe I skipped the reading a while back when the tsunami hit; it's probably appropriate to do the same thing here. I just wanted you to know I didn't forget about you. I'll be back again next week with a reading; I hope you're doing well and please send some good wishes down to the folks in Louisiana and Mississippi!
