Hi there!

I hope you had a good holiday weekend -- my in-laws always have a big picnic on the 4th out at the old family farm. Usually, a couple of hundred family members show up -- old folks, young folks, in-between folks. Lotsa good food and deserts!

Everyone tries to bring a covered dish; we have to drive in from Houston to Cheneyville, Louisiana (where the farm's at). It's about a five hour drive, so we always have to bring something that will keep and travel well. At first, we baked big rounds of bread and decorated the rounds with bits of bread dough -- grapevines, firework explosions, flags, that sort of stuff. Then we tried bringing deserts -- usually cakes topped with blueberries and strawberries/raspberries in an American flag pattern. There always seems to be plenty of veggie casseroles and such. There's also lots of fried fish -- the older family men who live in the area fish all year and freeze their catches for the yearly picnic.

It's a nice relaxing time -- like I said, it's at a farm and there're always things for kids to do at a farm so the grown-ups get to relax a bit. Really enjoyable -- am already looking forward to next year's get-together!

We'll again pull two cards -- the first suggests something we should focus on for the week. The second suggests things we might consider in order to fully benefit from the attributes of the first card.

The cards are:

Eight of Pentacles

The Hermit (Reversed)

The Eight of Pentacles suggests applying a focussed effort towards working on (or learning) a task. It recognizes that this sort of effort is usually quite enjoyable and comforting. Have you ever gotten so involved in a task that you didn't notice the time passing by? That's the sort of thing this Eight suggests. This card also acknowledges that doing a job extremely well -- checking the details and finishing up the loose ends -- results in a very rewarding feeling.

(You know, "focussed" looks funny, but "focused" doesn't look any better. Not too sure of the spelling.)

Let's look at our second card to see how we might best apply the Eight of Pentacles. Our second card is the Hermit (Reversed).

The Hermit is a very knowledgable card -- and his knowledge comes from experience, not from book smarts. Thus, the Hermit's knowledge is availalble to all of us -- because we all have experience. The Hermit's knowledge comes from deep within -- and so does our knowledge from experience. The Hermit suggests we look within ourselves for answers. The answers are there -- we just need to take the time to dig inside and find them. The Hermit is interested in truth -- and is open-minded about finding it.

The reversal could suggest we might not be receptive to the truths we know inside -- or it could suggest we're more interested in finding quick answers rather than taking the time to listen to what we know inside to be true. Let's put these cards together and see what we might come up with.

The Eight suggests taking the time to apply the necessary effort to resolve a situation (or task, or problem, or class, or project, or ....) We might wonder if we're making satisfactory progress -- if we apply time to solve something, we'd like to know that we're heading in the proper direction and not wasting our time. The Hermit suggests we can answer this question -- in fact, it suggests we already know the answer to this question! We just have to look inside ourselves to find the answer. We might not like the answer -- for instanct, we might find that we need to spend more time applied more seriously in order to resolve the problem correctly. Still, the Hermit is only interested in truth -- and if this is the truth, then our time is best spent listening the the truth we know rather than looking for short-cuts.

So ... the time we spend working on tasks is never wasted as long as we know our efforts are stepping in the right direction -- and we know deep inside where the right direction is!
